My design education began in the drafting field. Drafting is precise, technical, and practical. I have an interest in understanding how mechanical things work. To me, drafting is an extension of this. Drafting uses strict conventions and industry standards that allows little room for creativity. Every chance I had to express creativity in design, I pushed the boundaries as far as possible.
Eventually the necessity to adhere to the tight tolerances and strict guidelines that drafting work entails became less desirable to me. Soon my methods of design were shifting from technical conventions to artistic techniques.
3D design and animation has allowed me to express a mix of both reality and imagination in both technical and artistic fashions. The opportunity to tell stories that amuse myself through the art of motion backed by design produced with both technical and artistic methods has allowed me to fuse my areas of interest to produce work that directly reflects myself. Work that shows my sense of humor, wonder, and my attention to practical detail.
My progression of design pieces from drafting design to artistic design and eventually 3D design and animation shows my journey through, and consumption of design knowledge. Each piece is followed by a piece that shows growth and improvement. Each piece shows more and more of a reflection of myself. |
